Unraveling the Mystery of Mature Masculinity

Hey there! Each day, under-developed masculinity and counterproductive male leadership do deep and widespread damage to individuals, groups, businesses, society, and governance.

Why? It seems that most people are greatly confused about what authentically mature masculinity and male leadership actually look like… and don’t have the vaguest idea of how to develop these. That even includes many men who are actively involved in men’s work! If that's true of you too, you're far from alone!

As a psychologist who is an expert in integrating leader development, human potential, and men’s work — one whose many personal awards include “visionary leadership” and whose many book awards include “social change” and “current events in politics & society” — I’ve developed the first draft of a free document that demystifies what's causing these problems. More importantly, it offers a transcendent vision of truly mature masculinity and transcendent male leadership… and a practical roadmap for developing these.

This is very personal for me, having grown up with two very confusing and unappealing versions of masculinity. My Dad's version involved shaming and raging, while my Mom seemed to advocate that masculinity meant being a woman's best girlfriend. I also didn't see societal versions of male leadership that I resonated with (perhaps excluding President John F. Kennedy in real life and Star Trek's Captain James Kirk on television). It wasn't until I was approaching 50 years old that I finally discovered a version of masculinity that struck me as at least being more on track than anything else I'd encountered.

But even that had holes in it. You're about to discover what those holes are and the remedy that has become clear to me, which I call Phi Masculinity (based on the Greek letter Φ), for reasons you'll soon discover. We'll shortly dive into this topic, not only because it's intriguing but because it's profoundly essential for today's times and tomorrow's world. Before we do that, I'd like to address a few context items, to eliminate the possibility of misunderstanding my intentions:

With that now said, you are about to discover what I call Transcendent Male Leadership. Here's what that means:

The purpose of this document is to illuminate why there's so much uncertainty surrounding masculinity, and to offer ways to repair distortions and fill in missing pieces, by acquainting you with a psychologically and spiritually savvy vision of elevated masculinity and male leadership, and a framework for actualizing this. I've written this not only for purpose-driven male leaders, but also for women leaders who run into difficulties with men, and for helping professionals who assist male leaders.

Let's now turn our attention to five common reasons for the confusion over what enlightened masculinity is and isn't.

5 Big Reasons Why There's Widespread Confusion About What Authentic Masculinity Is and Isn't

1. Mixed Messages from Media: From superhero movies to reality TV, the media bombards us with conflicting, indeed polarized, images of what a "real man" should be. One moment, we're told that men should be tough and emotionless, and the next, we're encouraged to embrace vulnerability. It's no wonder we're all a bit puzzled!

2. Changing Social Norms: As society evolves, so do our ideas about gender roles. What was considered masculine a few decades ago might not hold the same meaning today. This shift leaves many people questioning where they fit in and how to express their masculinity in fully authentic ways that transcend polarization.

3. Cultural Differences: Masculinity isn't a one-size-fits-all concept. Different cultures have their own unique interpretations of what it means to be a man. This diversity can lead to confusion, especially in our increasingly globalized world where cultures mix and mingle.

4. Personal Experiences: Our personal experiences, both positive and negative, shape our understanding of masculinity. Family upbringing, friendships, life events, and unresolved traumas, all play a role in how we perceive what it means to be masculine. These varied experiences can lead to different interpretations and, sometimes, misunderstandings and even distortions.

5. Fear of Judgment: Let's face it—nobody wants to be judged or ridiculed for not fitting into a certain mold. The fear of not measuring up to societal expectations, especially in today's hyper-polarized age, can lead to conformity that makes it difficult for men to explore and express their true selves.

So, there you have it! The confusion surrounding masculinity is real, but now that you understand these reasons, you can start to piece together a puzzle that points the way forward. Exposed: Five Common-Yet-Insufficient Masculinity Lenses

In a world where the definition of masculinity is as varied as the colors of a kaleidoscope, understanding the true essence of enlightened masculinity has proven to be a daunting challenge for many men and women.

Five models of masculinity command a lot of attention. They all have Greek alphabet names: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Omega, and Sigma. Each offers a unique, albeit incomplete, lens for viewing masculinity. Because of this, they often create confusion, misconceptions, and even polarization. Let's delve into each lens to identify their golden virtues and shadowy pitfalls.

• The Alpha Male (α) Lens

  Gold: The Alpha Male embodies dominance, assertiveness, and leadership. He is the natural-born leader who takes charge and inspires others to follow. His confidence is infectious, and his ability to make decisive choices is unparalleled.

  Shadow: However, the Alpha's shadow looms large. His dominance can morph into aggression, his assertiveness into arrogance, and his leadership into tyranny. The pressure to be on top that Alpha Males always feel tends to lead to burnout and isolation in him, and to resentment and rebellion from those who don't turn the Alpha Male into a demigod.

• The Beta Male (β) Lens

  Gold: The Beta Male shines with cooperation, compassion, and empathy. He is the supportive friend, the understanding partner, and the empathetic leader. His approach facilitates harmony and nurtures relationships.

  Shadow: Yet, the Beta's shadow engenders doubt about him. His cooperative nature may be perceived as weakness, his compassion as passivity, and his empathy as indecisiveness. In striving to please others, he tends to lose sight of his own needs while inadvertently reinforcing self-centered entitlement in those around him.

• The Gamma Male (Γ) Lens

  Gold: The Gamma Male is a beacon of intellectualism, creativity, and emotional intelligence. He is a thinker, an innovator, and is an emotionally aware individual who values navigating life with depth and insight.

  Shadow: The Gamma's shadow is overthinking, emotional detachment, and feeling a sense overwhelm. His intellectual pursuits tend to isolate him from others, and his creativity risks becoming a refuge from reality.

• The Omega Male (Ω) Lens

  Gold: The Omega Male is the epitome of self-sufficiency, independence, and introspection. He is a lone wolf, content in his own company, and unafraid to walk his own path.

  Shadow: However, the Omega's shadow is alienation, stubbornness, and a reluctance to engage with the world. His independence tends to turn into isolation, and his introspection into self-absorption.

• The Sigma Male (Σ) Lens

  Gold: The Sigma Male values independence, self-reliance, and nonconformity. He is the enigmatic outsider, thriving on personal freedom and solitude. His ability to exist outside traditional hierarchies both intrigues and empowers him.

  Shadow: Yet, the Sigma's shadow manifests as aloofness, detachment, and an aversion to connection. His nonconformity leads to a lack of belonging, and his solitude to loneliness.

You might have noticed that there are overlaps between Omega and Sigma males as well as contrasts. If those intrigue you, feel free to review those details above before moving to the next section. When ready, keep on reading because we've not gotten to the juicy stuff yet!

Appreciating the gold in each of these five lenses of masculinity brings the multifaceted nature of masculinity into focus. Although masculinity, like any identity, is deeply personal and fluid, in today's world all of these lenses are incomplete at best and outdated at worst. What's called for in today's (and tomorrow's) world is a more holistic, integrated, and elevated understanding of enlightened masculinity; one in which strength coexists with sensitivity, assertiveness harmonizes with empathy, introversion complements extraversion, and challenge synergizes with nurturance.

Golden Integrative Masculinity - Introducing The Phi (Φ) Man

Creating a more integrative and holistic understanding of masculinity -- one that is optimally responsive to today's demands -- requires combining the best aspects of the five masculine lenses we just reviewed, including transmuting their shadow aspects into gold.

Since all of the existing concepts of masculinity are identified by a Greek letter, it seemed fitting to select a Greek letter for evolved masculinity. The letter I selected is Phi (Φ). Why Phi?

• The Greek letter Phi is associated with balance, harmony, and the Golden Ratio in mathematics and nature. This aligns well with combining the positive attributes of the five lenses of masculinity to create a well-rounded man. A Phi man thus embodies a spiritually and psychologically holistic and well-rounded approach to masculinity.

The Phi (Φ) Man is balanced and harmonious in his approach to life, incorporating leadership qualities of the Alpha, introspection of the Omega, empathy of the Beta, the intellectual approach of the Gamma, and the outside-the-box vision and engagement of the Sigma, to create a more integrated version of masculine wholeness, completeness, and maturity.

Even so, it's possible for men to express Phi (Φ) traits in shadowy ways. This can be minimized by elevating the two essential foundations of Phi (Φ) Masculinity, expressing the golden aspects of the five driving forces of masculinity, and getting free from the three faulty power postures... all of which are covered in this document.

Five Driving Forces Fueling Enlightened Masculinity: Making Phi (Φ) Practical and Achievable

In the journey to embody Phi (Φ) Masculinity, understanding the five driving forces behind masculinity is essential. These core energies, represented by the five core archetypes of masculinity, guide men toward actualizing their highest human potential. However, each archetype has both golden (positive) and leaden shadow (negative) expressions. (The reference to lead and gold is a tip of the hat to alchemy, which utilizes the metaphor of transmuting lead into gold.) Recognizing and harmonizing the golden expressions of each of a man's five driving forces, and transmuting the leaden shadow expressions of each of them, is a massively vital, yet commonly overlooked, ingredient in making Phi (Φ) Masculinity practical and achievable. You're about to discover those five core archetypal energies.

• 1. Being (Lover Archetype)

  • Golden Expression: The Lover archetype in its golden form is the embodiment of joy, passion, and connection. It is the energy that allows a man to experience life fully, embracing beauty, art, and intimacy. Its domain is delight, empathy, compassion, and a deep appreciation for the world and people around him. It's about stopping to smell the metaphorical roses. Being is the needed counterbalance to doing.

  • Shadow Expression: In its leaden shadow form, the Lover tends to become indulgent or self-neglectful, as well as overly dependent on external validation. This typically leads to a lack of joy and boundaries, to addiction, and to a diminished ability to commit to or persist with long-term goals.

  2. Doing (Warrior Archetype)

  • Golden Expression: The Warrior archetype represents strength, discipline, and courage. In its golden expression, it is the energy that drives a man to take strategic persistent effortful action, to protect, and to stand up for what is right. Its domain is resilient focused forward movement in accomplishing an outcome. Doing is the needed counterbalance to being.

  • Shadow Expression: The leaden shadow side of the Warrior tends to manifest as aggression, ruthlessness, and a tendency to dominate, steamroll, or control others... or its opposite: cowardice. This typically leads to burnout, chronic conflict, collateral damage while pursuing goals, and a diminished ability to experience joy, passion and connection.

  3. Stability (Steward Archetype)

  • Golden Expression: The Steward archetype is the guardian of stability, predictability, organization, and standards. In its golden form, it is the energy that maintains order and excellence. It is characterized by reliability, accountability, and a commitment to preserve the wellbeing of individuals and the group. Stability is the needed counterbalance to change.

  • Shadow Expression: The leaden shadow expression of the Steward tends to show up as being overly controlling, rigid, and resistant to change. This typically leads to stagnation, status quo addiction, fear of the unknown, and an inability to improvise in response to the unexpected.

  4. Change (Magician Archetype)

  • Golden Expression: The Magician archetype embodies transformation, creativity, and effortless manifestation (in contrast to the Warrior's effortful manifestation). In its golden expression, it is the energy that catalyzes innovation, problem-solving, buy-in, and sharing deeper knowledge with others. It is characterized by curiosity, intuition, and an ability to see beyond the surface. Change is the needed counterbalance to stability.

  • Shadow Expression: The leaden shadow expression of the Magician includes being manipulative, deceitful, withholding, arrogant, and disconnected from the realities of daily life. This typically leads to misusing knowledge and power to manipulate others. This alienates others and undermines his own higher purpose.

  5. Choicemaking On Behalf of Mission in Service to Source (Sovereign/King Archetype)

  • Golden Expression: The Sovereign archetype is responsible for vision, integrity, and leadership (first and foremost with self). The Sovereign embodies the inner wedding of the Two Loves (nurturance and challenge, divine feminine and divine masculine consciousness). In its golden form, it is Choicemaking energy in alignment with Source that guides a man to make the wisest, most loving, and most principled decisions that actualize his higher-purpose-driven mission of impact and serve the mission of the groups he leads. This form of transcendent devotion enables him to wisely utilize, orchestrate collaboration among, and bless the other core archetypal energies of being, doing, stability, and change, in doing their specialized parts to help actualize highest purpose. The Sovereign lives from the Transcendent Harmony Triad of higher love, higher wisdom, and spiritually responsible use of power.

  • Shadow Expression: The leaden shadow expression of the Sovereign includes being tyrannical, egotistical, and disconnected from higher purpose, higher wisdom, higher love, and the needs of others and groups. This typically leads to abusing authority, being unaccountable, and focusing on ego-oriented gains over spiritual alignment... or to abdicating the Choicemaking throne, which creates chaos and fuels power struggles for control.

  
  

  The dynamic interplay of these five driving archetypal energies into true Archetypal Synergy fuels a man's growth and greatly magnifies his effectiveness as a leader and a participant. Developing and coordinating golden expression of these driving energies makes actualizing Phi (Φ) Masculinity practical and achievable, equipping men to ethically navigate the complexities of life with far more inner wellbeing and outer effectiveness.

The Hero's Journey to Spiritually Enlightened Male Leadership

Elevated male leadership builds on Phi (Φ) Masculinity. The Hero's Journey to Spiritually Enlightened Male Leadership transcends the "power problem" that commonly plagues male leaders (and the people around them!), and is guided by a framework for simultaneously elevating masculine maturity and embodying transcendent leadership as a man.

These three all-too-common distorted relationships with power have endless harmful impacts that continue to plague today's world and undermine tomorrow's positive potential. Resetting how male leaders relate to and utilize power starts with harmonizing nuturance and challenge (the Two Loves), synergizing high-level authenticity, sophisticated collaboration skills, and masterful impact literacy (our three core drives), and embodying the golden and coordinated expression of our five core archetypal energies. Phi (Φ) Men in leadership roles then master a set of transcendent leadership skills that are vastly different from men's historical focus on compromise, and on coercion when compromise doesn't work.

The most effective and efficient way I have found to simultaneously elevate masculine maturity and embody transcendent leadership is through the SPARC Blueprint for Transcendent Male Leadership™.
